Three Musketeers with badass angel magic is the best description that I can come up with to describe Garth Nix’s first adult fantasy novel. I couldn’t put it down for a second, and I’m sad Angel Mage is a stand alone because I loved all the characters dearly, and the magic system as well. The things I did not love: the book was too short, and the ending too abrupt.
Garth Nix has a talent for writing entertaining magic systems with interesting consequences. In this world, the magic is based on the power of angels that are called down to help in exchange for a piece of the summoner’s life force. The versatility of the magic is definitely a strong point. The characters of the story were just fun to watch on their adventure. I loved the sibling dynamic between the four main characters and watching their relationships develop. The largest issue I had was with the ending. For all the build up, it felt like the story just ended.
Garth Nix did not disappoint with this new book and I will continue to hope that he writes a sequel. I give it 5 out of 5 swords. If you love classic novels with a fun magic spin this book is for you.

I am new podcaster who has been enjoying the fantasy genre for many, many… many years. I will read most any fantasy book but high and steampunk are my favorite subgenres.
