Talking is one of my favorite pastimes. I talk to my friends. I talk to my family. I talk to strangers. I talk to myself. I talk to hundreds of random listeners on two different podcasts a week. Some say I talk too much. I say not enough! That’s why I am incredibly excited to announce yet another platform for me to talk like a crazy person and for someone to listen like an even crazier person. Introducing…..The Nico Radio Show, or at least that’s what I’m calling it until I come up with a better name. It’s a weekly talk show hosted by yours truly, that will cover (you guessed it) whatever I want to talk about. It will air Tuesday afternoons from 12:00 to 2:00 starting April 14 on WFCS 107.7 FM, the student-run radio station of Central Connecticut State University.
So yes, Nico’s going to be on the radio and it’s anybody’s guess how it’s going to go. The show will follow roughly the same format as the podcast, segments of personal stories and opinions with the occasional guest to break things up. Except this time it will be two hours long, on FCC regulated airwaves and broadcast live to hundreds of people. In a word: terrifying. I often struggle to provide just an hour of content a week, and that includes profanity-laced nonsense that you couldn’t say within a five mile radius of a radio station. Never mind the fact that I’m going to continue doing the podcast, with no overlap between the two shows. How am I going to have enough stuff to say? How am I going to keep it clean? And how is it going to be funny?
I’d be lying if I said I had this all figured out. But I think I’ve come up with at least one solution. A big part The Nico Radio Show (again, gotta come up with a better name) is going to be live call-ins. Throughout the entire two hour block, I’ll leave the phone lines open at 860-832-1077 for listeners to call in and discuss whatever they want. Participation is going to be key for this thing to work, both in generating topics and giving people a break from my annoying voice. So my first request to all you lovely people reading this is to consider calling in to one of the upcoming shows. All I ask is that you have something to talk about and that you don’t swear in the process. We’ve done a few call-in shows on Two Cents Radio in the past, but this will be first time I do a show with full interactivity. Let’s make it badass!
There’s a reason why there’s not too many one-mic talk shows on college radio stations. It’s because they’re really, really, really, really hard. This show is truly one of the biggest challenges I’ve ever taken on, and I cannot wait to get started with it. WFCS is allowing me to live out one of life’s goals, so I’ll try my best to push through the nightmares and have fun with this thing. Podcasting has been great practice, but I know that I’m a long way away from being able to do a professional radio show. That’s ok. This might be a hot mess at first. In fact, it’s quite likely. But the experience of being on the radio every week will be invaluable. Get ready for a brand new chaotic experiment.
I’m continually stunned by the amount of support that The Nico Show and Two Cents Radio garner. Those podcasts have resonated with people in a way that I never could have imagined, and I am so thankful to have found an audience online that understands what I’m about. So I’ll conclude this sappy love letter by asking for your support one more time. Listen to the debut of The Nico Radio Show (not the official name) Tuesday April 14 at 12:00 noon EST on wfcsradio1077.com. Local listeners in the Hartford/New Britain, Connecticut area can listen on their FM radios by tuning in to 107.7. If you live anywhere else in the world, listen on the station’s website or by using the TuneIn Radio app. And of course, feel free to call in.
I’m working on a way to record each episode to archive online, so information on that will arrive in the coming weeks. Also keep your ears open for updates this summer, since the time slot may change at the end of the semester. And finally, I could use some name suggestions so please send those my way. Thanks again for your unwavering support of everything I do. It’s been a fun ride so far and I’m so stoked to experience the next phase together.
